Killing of George Barrow in North Carolina in 1930
Incident
George Barrow, 25, a farmer, was killed in 1930 by police chief M. M. Jones in Beaufort County, North Carolina. Jones fatally shot Barrow while attempting to arrest him for insulting a white girl. Accounts of the incident varied. In one account, Jones told Barrow to raise his hands and before he could do so, struck him repeatedly on the head with various tools. When Barrow attempted to escape, Jones shot him. In another account, Jones shot Barrow when Barrow attacked Jones with a knife (or a gun, according to a different version), injuring him.
