Zack T. Taylor Jr. (1915 - 1939), a laborer, died in custody in the County Farm prison in Ellis County, Texas. He was sent to prison for an unknown charge and was sentenced to six months. A few weeks later, he was shipped home dead. A letter to the NAACP reported that a doctor who examined the body reported that the kidneys were torn loose from the back and the spinal column very nearly broken. Taylor’s death certificate stated the cause of death as osteomyelitis vertebral.
