Case summary

Kenneth Long (1921 - 1946), a farm laborer and WWII navy veteran, was killed by highway patrolman Fred Holland in Wharton County, Texas. Kenny and his brother, Meron Long, were getting gas when they were threatened by a customer wielding an iron pipe who yelled that they should “put [their] shirttails in.” The Long brothers located the sheriff, who went back to the station with them. The sheriff, Gilley McLure, directed racial taunts at the Longs. In the ensuing melée, highway patrolman Holland shot Long four times. The police claimed that Long attempted to take a gun from one of the officers.
