Case summary

Grant Johnson, a store owner, was killed in 1942 by deputy sheriffs Strong and Pye in Perrine, Dade County, Florida. Strong and Pye often went to the Black community in Perrine to close down Black-owned businesses at the request of nearby white farmers. One day, when they ordered Johnson to close his store, Johnson allegedly refused. Strong and Pye then beat and shot him, and also injured Frances Burke, Johnson’s store partner. Johnson died in the hospital the next day.
