Jessie Coverson Sr., 42, a painter and carpenter, died in 1941 in Coahoma County, Mississippi. Coverson was on a chain gang following his conviction for a minor offense. He and other Black prisoners were subjected to severe beatings by J. F. Sewall, who was in charge of the chain gang. On the day that Coverson died, Sewall had beaten him, claiming he worked too slowly.
