Will McDuffie, 77, a sawmill worker and owner of a café, died in 1954 in Wilcox County, Alabama. McDuffie’s grandchildren found his body at the back of his house in the middle of the doorway. A year earlier, McDuffie’s wife, Della McDuffie, was killed by Sheriff Lummie Jenkins, who entered the café the couple owned, fired shots, and beat Della McDuffie, who was in a wheelchair.
