Killing of Charlie Lewis in Alabama in 1949
Incident
Charlie Lewis, age 40, died in 1949 in a jail in Birmingham, Alabama. Lewis had been fined for resisting arrest and trespassing, and released on a charge of murder. Shortly thereafter, he was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital and a funeral home picked up his body at the jail. There were conflicting reports about whether the body showed signs of violent treatment.
