Case summary

Lott Vergess (1895 – 1948) was killed by Deputy P. D. Logan in Jefferson County, Alabama. Vergess allegedly shot and killed Deputy Sheriff Dewey Rickles, who came to his house with Deputies Logan and A. A. Wood on a disturbance complaint. When Rickles entered the house, he was hit and killed by three gunshots. When Vergess later came out of the front door, Logan opened fire and killed him. A coroner returned a finding of justifiable homicide.
