Case summary

Flam Belle (1919 - 1941), a laborer, was killed by prison guards at Sparta camp in Hancock County, Georgia. Bell was beaten with a hose pipe. A legislative committee which visited the camp reported it found strong evidence that Bell was beaten to death and recommended the suspension of Warden H. A. Compton, Boss Alvin Johnson, a guard, and Dr. E. H. Hutchens, camp physician. A coroner’s jury claimed that Bell’s cause of death was sunstroke.
