Killing of Phinizy William Summerour in Georgia in 1945
Incident
Phinizee Summerour (1904-1945), a porter, was killed by Arthur Frieberg in Atlanta, Georgia. Summermour and another Black man, who was smoking, were sitting together on a bus. Frieberg, a white bus passenger, was angry about the smoking and an argument ensued. Frieberg fatally shot Summerour as Summerour was exiting the bus. Grand jury declined to indict.
