James Ellis Holmes, Jr., age 19, a laborer, died in 1950 in Brunswick, Glynn County, Georgia. Holmes was participating in gambling games near the Brunswick River when police arrived and accosted the gamblers. Officer Foy L. Mosely fired several warning shots at Holmes as he and others tried to escape. Holmes attempted to swim across the river and drowned.
