Killing of Lila Mae Dye in Florida in 1947
Incident
Lila Mae Dye (1920 - 1947), a housewife, was killed by W.E. Calley, a white man who owned a local grocery store, in Columbia County, Florida. Calley went to Dye’s house to collect a grocery bill and during an argument attacked her and shot her. Calley was charged with first degree murder. Trial jury acquitted.
