Pvt. John Daniel McCormick (1921 – 1943) died near Lee County, North Carolina. Newspapers reported that McCormick was struck by a train when he slipped and fell in front of an approaching train. A letter to the NAACP from James Lee, a Sanford citizen, stated that while McCormick was visiting his father during a three-day furlough, an officer attempted to arrest him. McCormick refused arrest and the officer fatally shot McCormick.
