Killing of Aletha Bell Carter in South Carolina in 1945
Incident
Aletha Bell Carter, 17, a high school girl, was killed in 1945 in Horry County, South Carolina. Carter disappeared after leaving home to go to a store. She was found dead in a ditch. Although her death certificate stated the cause of death as drowning, an examination revealed that Carter was struck and raped. A white insurance agent was suspected of raping and killing Carter.
