Case summary

John Griggs, 30, a box factory worker, was killed in 1934 by a mob aided by police in Kirbyville, Jasper County, Texas. Sheriff Tom Hughes arrested Griggs for associating with Ada Lake, a white female student. As Hughes was transporting Griggs to another jail, deputies G.A. Smith and W.E. Davidson and a white mob grabbed Griggs. Griggs was hanged, shot, and dragged behind an automobile.
