Case summary

Fred Moore, age 16, a farm hand, was killed in 1933 by a lynch mob in Assumption Parish, Louisiana. Sheriff Lezine H. Himel arrested Moore for the rape and murder of Anna Mae LaRose, a white teen, and jailed him. Deputy Able Landry gave the jail keys to the mob. After his death Moore’s parents, Louis Moore and Lily Eliska Moore, filed a civil suit against Himel and his insurer. A jury found Himel liable and awarded damages. The insurance company settled.
