Case summary

Joseph Gregory, age 26, a sawmill worker and WWII veteran, was killed in 1950 by sheriff Harrison in Oxford, Granville County, North Carolina. According to affidavits from Gregory’s wife Katie Louise Gregory and others referenced by the NAACP, Harrison had entered the Gregory home without producing a warrant to arrest Gregory. A struggle ensued, and Harrison fatally shot Gregory and then drove away with his body. Coroner exonerated Harrison.
